Free EYFS Outdoor Role Play Planning Guide
For nurseries and preschools, outdoor role play is one of the most powerful tools you have. It supports communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, and physical development. Which are all core areas of the EYFS framework, while keeping children genuinely engaged and having the time of their lives.
But we know that setting up meaningful outdoor role play can feel like a challenge, especially when you’re balancing so many things at once. That’s why we’ve put together this guide, packed with practical ideas you can bring to your outdoor space right now, whatever the season.
“The best outdoor play doesn’t need expensive equipment. It needs space, imagination, and a practitioner who believes in the magic of child-led learning.”
Why Outdoor Role Play Matters in EYFS Settings
Before we dive into the ideas, let’s talk about why this matters so much. Outdoor role play isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s deeply rooted in how young children learn best.
When children engage in imaginative, role-based play outdoors, they’re building vocabulary through real conversation, developing confidence as they try on different roles, learning to negotiate and share, strengthening gross motor skills, and connecting with the world around them. All of this maps beautifully onto the seven areas of learning in the EYFS, making outdoor role play one of the most holistic and effective activities you can provide.
6 Outdoor Role Play Ideas Your Children Will Love
These ideas work brilliantly across a range of outdoor spaces, from a big garden to a modest paved area. They’re all child-led, EYFS-aligned, and completely adaptable to different age groups from 18 months to 7 years.
🏕️ Camp Site Adventure
Set up a simple camp area using a pop-up tent, pretend campfire (orange and yellow fabric or safe LED lights), and small backpacks filled with “exploration” items. Children take on roles as campers, rangers, or wildlife spotters. Encourage them to make maps, identify “creatures,” and prepare pretend outdoor meals together.
Tip: Add magnifying glasses and bug pots for extra outdoor explorer magic!
🧱 Construction Site
Transform a corner of your outdoor space into a mini construction site. Foam bricks, hard hats, high-vis vests, measuring tapes, and clipboards with “plans” are all you need. Children become builders, architects, and site managers, planning, discussing, collaborating, and problem-solving as they construct their imaginary buildings.
Tip: Use chalk to draw roads and floor plans on the ground for an extra layer of play.
🐾 Outdoor Vet Clinic
Bring the vet clinic outside! Set up a small table with soft toy animals, bandages, pretend stethoscopes, appointment books, and waiting area chairs. Children practise caring for animals, recording “symptoms,” and explaining treatments — all incredible language and emotional development opportunities.
Tip: Include a “pet carrier” for collecting and transporting animals around the garden.
🛒 Garden Supermarket
Set up a simple outdoor market stall using crates, baskets, pretend food, price labels, and shopping bags. Add a till and play money to bring maths into the fun. Children take turns as shopkeepers and customers, developing turn-taking, communication, and early number skills in a totally natural way.
Tip: Include a “special offers” board for children to practise mark-making and early writing.
🚒 Fire Station Base
Children absolutely love this one! Set up a fire station area with simple costumes, a “fire engine” made from a large cardboard box or riding toy, and pretend hoses. Include an emergency phone and incident log. Children take turns responding to emergencies, coordinating responses, and working as a team — brilliant for PSED and language.
Tip: Create fire safety posters together beforehand as a linked activity.
☕ Outdoor Café
A classic, and for good reason! Set up a little café area with a small table, pretend cups and plates, a chalkboard menu, order pads, and an apron. Children become chefs, waiters, and customers, taking orders, writing lists, handling money, and having rich, purposeful conversations, often for extended periods of time.
Tip: Use natural materials (sticks, leaves, stones) as ingredients for an added outdoor learning twist.
💡 Practitioner Tips for Outstanding Outdoor Role Play
- Follow the child’s lead. Set up the environment and then step back. Let children direct where the play goes — you’ll be amazed at what they create.
- Rotate your themes. Keeping things fresh maintains excitement. Swap themes every few weeks to keep imaginations sparked.
- Use real props where safe to do so. Real (child-safe) tools, crockery, and materials add authenticity and enrich the play experience.
- Invite children into the set-up. Ask for their ideas when arranging the space. Ownership leads to deeper engagement.
- Observe and document. Outdoor role play is goldmine for EYFS observations. Keep your camera close and note those meaningful moments.
- Welcome all abilities. Role play naturally accommodates children at all stages. Think about how each set-up can be accessible and welcoming for every child.
