Why Role Play Matters in EYSF and KS1
Children learn best through active, meaningful experiences. In both the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYSF) and Key Stage 1, role play plays a vital role in helping children make sense of the world around them.
Role play supports children to:
- Explore and express emotions
- Develop social skills and empathy
- Practise communication and language
- Build confidence and independence
- Develop problem-solving skills
By offering familiar role play scenarios, children are able to re-enact real-life experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
How Our Role Play Sessions Support Learning
EYSF (Nursery & Reception)
Our role play sessions align closely with EYFS principles, particularly supporting:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
- Communication and Language
Sessions are:
- Child-led and play-based
- Open-ended and inclusive
- Suitable for mixed abilities
- Designed to support observation and assessment
Children explore the role play areas at their own pace, while practitioners can extend learning through sensitive questioning and interaction.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)
For KS1 children, role play supports learning by:
- Encouraging collaboration and teamwork
- Developing spoken language and vocabulary
- Supporting emotional regulation and resilience
- Linking learning to real-life contexts
Sessions can be used to:
- Support wellbeing and transition
- Reinforce PSHE and social learning
- Encourage imaginative thinking and confidence
Role play for KS1 remains playful, while offering opportunities for deeper discussion, problem-solving, and reflection.

Supporting Children's Mental Health Through Role Play
Role play is a powerful tool for supporting children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing across both EYFS and KS1.
Through imaginative play, children can:
Re-enact familiar or challenging situations
Process worries and changes
Practise caring for others
Develop coping strategies
Build a sense of safety and reassurance
When children are given time, space and familiar scenarios to play, they are often able to express emotions and experiences that may be difficult to put into words.
